OREM, UTAH – As we enter the final regular season game of the year, almost all the statistics are in. A pretty good case can be made for or against the quality of the BYU Cougars’ play against each of their opponents this year.

What is clear is that the Cougars have a very good passing game. They have surpassed the opponents’ averages of passing efficiency yielded and passing yards allowed nine and ten times respectively. Teams have been hard pressed to completely shut down the passing game.

Where opponents have found success is in stopping the BYU rushing attack. The Cougars have held to below average efforts in eight of the 11 outings. Even San Jose St and Fresno St, who are currently ranked 109th and 117th in rushing defense, were able to keep BYU well below their rushing defense averages.

The Cougars defense has been a mixed bag this year. They have played extremely well at times this year. Against the likes of Boise State, Connecticut, Cincinnati, Wagner and San Jose State, BYU dominated those offenses, holding them below their averages in all the categories we follow. But the Cougars have also had very poor showings against East Carolina, Michigan and Missouri and even Nebraska. Some of those teams, namely Missouri, are extremely poor offensive teams and had their best offensive outings of the season.

As always, here is how the BYU game compared to the opponent’s offensive and defensive averages.

Nota bene: Remember the season averages listed are those WITHOUT the BYU game factored into the calculations.
